JLAB stands for JROTC Leadership & Academic Bowl.  It is a nationally recognized academic competition created exclusively for JROTC students. By participating, cadets learn the values of citizenship, leadership, academic competition, and college opportunity. All cadets will take the Practice Test in October. Those scoring 70% or better will be invited to join the FL-20022 JLAB Academic Team.

There are many benefits of having cadets participate in the Academic Bowl:
  • Improve SAT/ACT scores
  • Increase interest in college admissions
  • Demonstrate academic strength of our JROTC program
  • Boost esprit de corps
  • Represent the school, county, and state

JLAB Competition Dates (typical)

  • October 1st through October 25th  - Practice test
  • October 26th through November 20th - Team registration
  • November 1st through November 20th - Level I - The Challenge competition
  • February 1st through February 15th - Level II - Zero Hour Threat competition
  • June 19th through June 23rd - Level III - The National Championship at JLAB (hosted by The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC)

Academic Team Requirements & Composition

  • Academic Team = four primary members and two alternates
  • Cadets may be juniors (11th grade), sophomores (10th grade), or freshmen (9th grade)
  • NO seniors (12th grade) may participate.

Each JROTC unit will be allowed on Academic Team consisting of four cadets - they may be juniors, sophomores, or freshmen.  Seniors cannot participate on the team.  Two alternates may be named and may participate in the online testing in case a team member must drop out before the end of the competition; however, alternates are not required.

Level I and Level II Competition

One of the main goals of JROTC Academic Bowl is to prepare students for state exit/graduation exams as well as college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT.  However, as JROTC instructors we are understandably interested in measuring how well our cadets are learning the JROTC curriculum.  Therefore, we will have a mix of JROTC curriculum as well as English, Math and Science questions in the event level of the competition.  A few questions about current events are also included - focusing on national and international news, particularly international relations, politics, business and science.  All of the current events questions will be taken from major media available on television, the internet and in daily newspapers.
Level I

"The Challenge" will include 25% JROTC questions, 65% SAT/ACT type questions and 10% current event questions.
Level II

"Zero Hour Threat" will include 15% JROTC questions, 75% SAT/ACT type questions and 10% current event questions.
