The Belleview High School AFJROTC Air Rifle Marksmanship program was approved in the Summer of 2019. Details are still being worked out with BHS Administration as to the location for the range and a practice schedule. The Marksmanship program promotes teamwork, self-confidence, concentration and basic marksmanship skills. Outstanding cadets can also earn scholarships to 4-year colleges and universities.
Cadets compete in the Olympic three-position 10-meter Air Rifle format. Competition season is in the fall semester, with a combination of postal and traveling shoulder to shoulder matches, culminating with the JROTC state championships in December. Cadets will do a limited spring practice schedule starting in February.
The program has a rigorous process for acceptance. Cadets must maintain a minimum unweighted 2.0 cumulative GPA, no failing classes, and an "A" in their ROTC class. Cadets must attend the safety class and pass a written test annually at 100%. The Varsity Team consists of only four cadets, and there are only four cadets on Junior Varsity as well, so only the best shots are selected for the teams. Team tryouts are held during the 2nd week of school in the fall semester and 1st week in February. Cadets may earn a school Varsity Letter for competition and participation.
